Remotes / Outside Broadcasting using APT Codecs

News / Live Events Live Music

For news journalists, there are two specific applications where codecs are used and latency is a key issue in both.

Firstly, a journalist contributing “live” to an on-air presenter - in this instance, it is impossible to conduct a two-way conversation between presenter and remote journalist if the delay exceeds 20 milliseconds. Second is the situation were a journalist takes his monitoring feed “off air”. With audio travelling from location to studio to transmitter and back to journalist, a long latency would make such an application impossible.

For radio stations whose major feature is live music, then a major concern for the Chief Engineer is the retention of the audio quality and stereo imaging. Of course, depending on the genre of the music, then the “major concern” may be downscaled to a “modest concern” i.e. listeners of classical music are typically more discerning than listeners of contemporary content who tend to be less demanding on quality.
